How to install maps on GPS: TopoHispania

Hello, saddlebags! In this post we're going to see Step by Step How to install the best GPS map of Spain available: TopoHispania. Besides being good, it's free, so let's get to it.

Many people get stuck when installing maps on their GPS, especially with Topo Hispania, since it is not installed as easily as the maps of Open Street Map, which usually come with an .exe file that is downloaded and installed directly.

However, if you are going to move around Spain It's well worth taking this map. It's by far the best. So just follow these points one by one, and by the end of the post, you'll have Topohispania loaded onto your GPS.

Steps to install Topohispania on our GPS

1. Install Basecamp

As usual in all the Garmin and GPS tutorials we have published, the first step is always to install Basecamp.

I never tire of saying that it is the best program to manage files of our GPS, and it's also completely free. So if you don't have it, download it now and install it on your PC.

Download Basecamp

2. Register on the elgps.com forum

Next we will have to register in the forum elgps.com to be able to access the download of the maps.

This step is Totally necessary and that's where a lot of people get stuck because they look for a place to download it directly and can't find it.

To register, you can click on the following link:

Register at elgps.com

3. Go to the maps section

Once registered, log in with your newly created username and password. Once logged in, click the following link:

Topohispania download page

4. Download Topohispania 2.04 for free

All the instructions for downloading the maps are provided on the download page. It may seem a bit complicated since there are a multitude of download links and At first we may get a little overwhelmed.

If we go down a little we will begin to see link packagesThese links are for downloading the maps. In summary, you have to choose between the following options:

  • Topohispania version (we recommend always choosing the latest one)
  • Choose whether or not we want elevation and height data (we recommend including them)
  • Operating system (Windows or Mac)
  • Download method (via .exe or in .rar parts)

For most cases it will be: Version 2.04 with DEM dice for Windows >> OPTION 1

Once we have located the file (or files) we want, we will download it to our computer.

These are files that take up a lot of space, so depending on your connection it may take more or less time.

5. Install the maps

Once we have the .exe file or the compressed files, we will proceed to install them. It is It is important that you have Basecamp closed. at the time of installing the maps.

Remember that if you have chosen to download them in parts, you must unzip the first file and the rest will be unzipped automatically.

If you have chosen the .exe you just have to run it and follow the instructions.

6. Check maps

Once Topohispania is installed we will open Basecamp We'll go to the "Maps" tab to check if it appears among the available maps. If it does, it means we already have the full map on our computer.

7. Put the maps in Garmin

Next if we want to put the map or a part of the map in our GPS we will follow the following sequence:

  • Open Basecamp.
  • Connect our GPS via USB and wait for the program to recognize it.
  • Right-click on the “Internal Storage” folder of our GPS and select “Install Maps.”
  • Follow the installation process. I recommend always selecting the advanced/partial installation to select the parts of the map you need. This will save you a lot of space on your GPS memory.

If you have problems at this point, I recommend that you consult the complete tutorial: How to put maps into our GPS.

PD: Jesús Nieto recommends the following if we have problems with Basecamp when installing maps:

ERROR INSTALLING MAP ON GARMIN GPS – SOLUTION:
Maps are not installed correctly from BaseCamp.
Not even in the option: Maps, Install maps
Not even in the option: Internal storage (right mouse button), Install maps.

Then you have to go to the folder where MapInstall and TopoHispania were downloaded when we installed them at the time in BaseCamp.

It should be here: C:/Garmin.

We run MapIstall, with the BaseCamp app running and the GPS connected.

It will open the same installation screens as if we ran it from the BaseCamp application and then the maps will be installed on the GPS.

Why? No idea.
But it works.

8. Check that the map is on the GPS

Once we have completed the installation process, it is important to disconnect our GPS and verify that the map has been installed correctly.
