Microsoft begins: First Windows 10 PCs receive Windows 11 headline feature

Microsoft

Microsoft has started rolling out a major update to Windows 10 which brings one of the most anticipated features of Windows 11 to the previous operating system. The update, which is part of the November 2021 Patch Tuesday release, enables support for Android apps on Windows 10 through the Amazon Appstore.

This means that Windows 10 users can now access thousands of Android apps on their PCs, including popular apps like TikTok, Instagram, Netflix, and more. Apps can run in windowed or full-screen mode, and can be pinned to the taskbar or Start menu for easy access.

To use this feature, Windows 10 users need to install the Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) from the Microsoft Store and then download the Amazon Appstore app from there. Once installed, users can log in with their Amazon account and browse the app catalog. Users can also use their Microsoft account to sync their app preferences and settings across devices.

Support for Android apps is one of the key selling points of Windows 11, which launched in October. However, Microsoft had previously announced that it would also bring this feature to Windows 10, as part of its commitment to support the previous operating system until October 2025.

The update is available for Windows 10 version 21H2 and higher and requires a PC with a 64-bit processor, at least 8 GB of RAM, and at least 16 GB of free storage space. Users can check for the update by going to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update.

Microsoft has also released other security and quality improvements for Windows 10 as part of the Patch Tuesday update, which fixes several vulnerabilities and bugs. Users are recommended to install the update as soon as possible to keep their PCs protected and up-to-date.

Microsoft has announced a new feature for Windows 10 users: Copilot. Copilot is a tool that helps users perform tasks on their PC by providing them with hints, tips, and shortcuts based on their context and preferences. Copilot can also automate some actions, such as opening apps, adjusting settings, or sending emails.

Copilot is currently available to Windows Insiders who are in the release preview channel and have installed Windows 10 22H2 Build 19045.3757 (KB5032278). To access Copilot, you must go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update and enable the “Get the latest updates as soon as they are available” option. After checking for updates, you should see Copilot appear on your taskbar or notification area.

Microsoft plans to roll out Copilot to all Windows 10 devices in the coming months, starting with PCs and laptops that are not joined to a domain. Copilot will work with any version of Windows 10 supported by Microsoft. Copilot is designed to improve the user experience and productivity of Windows 10 users, especially those who are new to the operating system or want to learn more about its features and capabilities.

Microsoft Copilot: What Windows 10 users need to know

Microsoft has recently introduced a new feature called Copilot, which is designed to help users with various tasks on their Windows devices. Copilot is a conversational AI assistant that can answer questions, provide advice, and perform actions based on natural language. Copilot is now available for Windows 11 users, but what about Windows 10 users? Here are some important points to keep in mind.

Copilot for Windows 10 is rolling out gradually

Microsoft is rolling out Copilot to Windows 10 users in phases, starting with the latest version of the operating system, Windows 10 version 21H2 (also known as November 2021 Update). Users who have this version installed will receive Copilot as part of regular monthly updates. To check your version of Windows 10, go to Settings > System > About and find the operating system build number.

Centrally managed Windows 10 machines will follow later

For centrally managed Windows 10 machines used by enterprises or authorities (Windows 10 Enterprise or Education version 22H2 and Professional devices), Microsoft wants to include Copilot in the deployment process in a later deployment phase. For administrators who want to prepare for this, Microsoft recommends this support document.

How to start the copilot

As soon as Copilot is installed, you can start it using the Copilot icon to the right of the taskbar. A chat window will then open where you can enter your requests. You can use the co-pilot through the microphone icon within the chat window but also by voice.

restricciones

Copilot still has some limitations in Windows 10, for example it does not support multi-monitor operation. You will find these restrictions explained here. Unlike Windows 11, Copilot is not available for apps on Windows 10.

As with Windows 11, the same applies to Windows 10: Copilot is not yet available for users in Germany at launch. At least on Windows 11 computers you can activate Copilot with a trick. It is not yet known if this bypass will also work on Windows 10.
