Windows 10: Microsoft launches Copilot, but with a major restriction
`
Copilot is a new feature that allows Windows users to interact with an artificial intelligence that can help them with various tasks. Copilot can, for example, answer questions, create reminders, open files, change settings or start programs. The co-pilot also learns from the user’s behavior and preferences and adapts accordingly.
Unfortunately, Copilot is not yet available for all Windows 10 users. It has not yet been officially activated in Germany as Microsoft is still working to adapt it to local laws and data protection regulations. Windows 11 users have already been able to activate Copilot with a trick, but this does not work on Windows 10. While there are other ways to use Copilot, these involve risks and you should only attempt them at your own risk. We therefore recommend to be patient and wait until Microsoft releases Copilot for Germany.
In this post, we will share with you the latest news from Microsoft about Copilot for Windows 11 and Windows 10. This is an update to our previous post from November 2023:
Back then, we reported that Windows 10 would get Windows 11’s Copilot, according to a credible source. Now, Microsoft has officially announced that Windows 10 users will be able to enjoy the most innovative feature of Windows 11, which is designed to replace Windows 10.
At the end of November, Microsoft launched the co-pilot for internal preview versions: the first PCs running Windows 10 gained access to the main feature of Windows 11.
Microsoft changes plans due to user comments
Many Windows 10 users have expressed dissatisfaction with the upcoming transition to Windows 11, which will require higher hardware specifications and a new user interface. As a result, Microsoft has decided to adjust its strategy and offer more options to Windows 10 users. This was announced by the company in connection with the release of Windows 10 Test Build 19045.3754 (KB5032278) for the Release Preview Channel, which is available to insiders using Windows 10 version 22H2. According to the support document, Microsoft states:
We are pleased to introduce Copilot on Windows (in preview version) for devices running Windows 10 version 22H2 Home and Pro. The «Copilot in Windows» button will appear on the right side of the taskbar. When you click it, Copilot will appear on the right side of your screen in Windows. It is designed to be non-intrusive and not interfere with desktop content or open application windows.
