Downloading and installing Windows Server 2022 Standard may seem like a difficult task, especially with limited IT skills. But don't worry, this guide breaks down all the steps required to download, install, and activate Windows Server 2022.
The process is relatively simple and can be completed by most people with minimal IT knowledge. Below we explain the procedure step by step.
Step 1 – Download your copy of Windows Server 2022
The first step is to download the software. There is a link to the Microsoft download site in the email we sent you with your Microsoft Genuine Product Key. Don't worry if you don't have the details to hand, the link below will take you to the correct web page:

Once on the page, scroll down until you see the heading “Get started for free.” You will see a link that says “Download the ISO” – click on this link and follow the instructions to download the ISO file.
Step 2 – Prepare your ISO file
An ISO file contains all the files and programs needed to install your copy of Windows Server 2022. However, to install the software, you will need to move the files to some kind of removable media. The most practical and easy to use is a USB drive. For this purpose, it needs to be at least 8GB and formatted in FAT32.
To check if a USB drive is formatted to FAT32, follow these instructions:
- Connect your USB drive to a Windows computer and open a File Explorer window.
- Find the USB drive in the “This PC” listing and right-click on it.
- Select “Properties” from the context menu that appears.
- On the “General” tab, you’ll see the file system type listed. Most USB drives are already formatted in FAT32, so this is the most common.
If your USB drive is already in FAT32, you can skip the next section.
How to format a USB drive to FAT32
In the unlikely event that your USB drive is not in FAT32, the process to convert it is simple. Follow the steps below.
Important: The following procedure will erase all data on the USB drive, so make sure there are no critical files on it before proceeding.
- Connect the USB drive to a Windows computer and find it in a File Explorer window.
- Right-click on the drive and select “Format” from the context menu that appears.
- Select the FAT32 (Default) option from the “File System” drop-down menu and check the “Quick Format” box.
- Click “Start”, the process will only take a few seconds and once it is complete you will be ready to proceed to the next step.
Copy the ISO file
The next step is to copy the ISO file you downloaded in Step 1 to your FAT32 formatted USB drive. Once this is complete, you are ready to begin the installation.
Step 3 – Install Windows Server 2022
This step is where some users may experience minor difficulties.
Basically, the procedure involves plugging your USB drive with the ISO file into the target server and letting the server boot using the installation files on the USB drive. Once this is accomplished, the rest of the process involves following the steps in the installation wizard.
The main problem users encounter is getting the server to boot from the USB drive. If there is no existing operating system on the server, the boot procedure should predefine the USB drive. If that is the case, you are well on your way to installing Windows Server 2022. Simply follow the wizards to complete the installation and then move on to the activation section.
Change boot order
If you encounter problems at this stage, you will need to manually force the server to boot from the USB drive. Unfortunately, the way to do this varies from server to server, so it is impossible to dictate precise instructions for this step. However, the steps are fairly similar, and we have outlined a typical procedure below.
Intel-based server
The following instructions describe how to change the boot order on a server that uses an Intel server motherboard.
- With the server powered off, plug in your prepared USB drive.
- Power on the server and press the F2 key to enter the system BIOS.
- Navigate to the “Boot Maintenance Manager” option and select “Change Boot Order” to enter the boot menu.
- Use the up and down arrows to navigate to the device you want to boot from (you should see the USB drive listed as an option).
- Use the Enter key to select your device and confirm your selection.
- Press the F10 key to save changes and reboot the machine.
If everything worked as expected, the installation of Windows Server 2022 should now begin. Follow the installation wizards to complete the process.
Step 4 – Activate Windows Server 2022
